South Carolina Senate Passes Ban On Gender-Affirming Care For Minors

(Columbia, SC)-- South Carolina lawmakers are advancing a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender residents under the age of 18.

On Thursday, the state Senate voted 27 to 8 in favor of a measure that prohibits health professionals from prescribing puberty blockers, hormone treatments, or gender-transition surgeries for minors.

The proposed legislation would also require school administrators to notify parents if their child wants to use a name, nickname, or pronouns that do not match the child's biological sex.

The bill had already been passed by the House in January, but because it was changed by the Senate, the House must now vote to adopt the Senate version or send it to a conference committee for resolution.
